Two botanicals, two different rulebooks

Feel Free Classic is a 2oz tonic built on kava root and kratom leaf. The kava half is simple: kava is sold openly across the U.S. and isn’t part of any kratom-related action. Every hard question about Feel Free’s status is really a question about the kratom leaf in the bottle — and that question has three layers.

The three layers

Federal: the August 2026 scheduling covered concentrated 7-OH — not kratom leaf or its naturally occurring mitragynine, which is what Feel Free contains. State: the California Department of Public Health has taken the position that kratom products are not permitted for sale in California, while separate legislation that would regulate rather than prohibit is pending in Sacramento. Local: several cities, including the City of San Diego and Oceanside, have had their own ordinances since 2016. Meanwhile Botanic Tonics distributes Feel Free nationally, and most states treat these products differently than California’s health department currently does.

Is Feel Free legal in California?
There isn’t a one-word answer, because Feel Free contains two botanicals that get different treatment. The kava side isn’t part of any kratom-related action. Is Feel Free affected by the 7-OH ban?
The August 2026 federal action covers concentrated 7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine) above a set threshold. Feel Free Classic is a kava root and kratom leaf tonic — it isn’t a concentrated 7-OH product. The 7-OH scheduling and the questions around kratom leaf are separate issues that often get mixed together.
Why is Feel Free still sold nationally if the rules are unsettled?
Botanic Tonics distributes Feel Free across the country, and most states treat kratom-containing products differently than California’s health department currently does — some regulate them explicitly through kratom consumer protection acts. Rules also keep moving in both directions. That’s exactly why we point people to official sources rather than making the call for them.
Does Feel Free contain kratom?
Yes. Feel Free Classic contains kratom leaf alongside kava root, and the label carries the manufacturer’s note that kratom can be habit-forming if not used as directed.
