What mitragynine actually is

Mitragynine is the compound that makes kratom, kratom. It occurs naturally in the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa — a tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia — and it accounts for the large majority of the alkaloid content in a kratom leaf. When a product lists an alkaloid percentage or a milligram strength, mitragynine is usually what’s being measured.

Kratom, mitragynine, extracts — what’s the difference?

Kratom is the plant and the leaf material itself. Mitragynine is the primary compound inside that leaf. Extracts take the leaf and concentrate its alkaloids rather than using ground whole leaf, so a smaller serving carries more of them. All three describe the same plant at different levels of processing — which is why “kratom” and “mitragynine” often show up on the same product.

Is mitragynine legal in San Diego?

The honest answer is that it depends on where you are, and the rules are moving. California’s Department of Public Health has taken the position that kratom products are not permitted for sale in the state, and several cities — San Diego and Oceanside among them — have had their own ordinances since 2016.
