The short version

Kava is a root from the South Pacific whose active compounds are kavalactones. Kratom is a leaf from Southeast Asia whose active compounds are alkaloids, mitragynine first among them. Kava vs kratom FAQ

Is kava the same as kratom?
No — they’re unrelated plants from different parts of the world. Kava is a South Pacific root in the pepper family, active compounds are kavalactones. Kratom is a Southeast Asian leaf in the coffee family, active compounds are alkaloids like mitragynine. They get mentioned together because bars and shot brands often serve both.
Why do so many shots combine kava and kratom?
It’s a product-format thing: brands like Feel Free, Kanva and Zana Chill blend kava root extract with kratom leaf extract in one small bottle, at very different strengths per brand. Our shot comparison page lays the blends out side by side.
Is kava legal even where kratom is restricted?
Kava is not part of the federal kratom-alkaloid action, and it’s sold openly across the U.S. Kratom’s rules are layered — federal, California state, and local ordinances each say something different, and they’re moving. I get workplace-tested — which lane is mine?
