What is MG001?

MG001 is a purified mitragynine formulation in a NIDA-sponsored Phase 1 study — an investigational drug, not something any store sells. Here's what it is, who developed it, and how it differs from mitragynine products on the shelf. No health claims.

A drug candidate, not a product

MG001 starts from the same alkaloid that occurs naturally in kratom leaf — mitragynine — but it’s a purified, pharmaceutical-grade formulation going through the FDA’s drug process. That’s a different world from a store shelf. An investigational drug is made to exacting specifications, given only to enrolled volunteers, and measured at every step. What it might eventually be approved for is a question for the researchers and the FDA, not a store.

Where the study stands

This is the first time MG001 is being given to people. Phase 1 looks at safety and at how the body absorbs and clears the compound, in about 32 healthy adults, against a placebo. It doesn’t test whether MG001 works for anything — that would take later phases and years. The ClinicalTrials.gov listing (NCT07204171) has the current status.

What this has to do with our menu

Only the alkaloid. We carry mitragynine products — botanical products, third-party lab tested, sold to adults 21 and over. They are not MG001, they are not drugs, and they have not been evaluated by the FDA. If you want the background on the alkaloid itself, start with what mitragynine is and what changed with 7-OH.

MG001 FAQ

What is MG001?
MG001 is an oral formulation of purified mitragynine, the most abundant alkaloid in the kratom leaf (Mitragyna speciosa). It was developed by researchers at the National Institutes of Health and the University of Florida, and it is being tested as an investigational drug in a study sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Can I buy MG001?
No. MG001 is an investigational new drug. It isn’t sold by any store, pharmacy or website, and it isn’t approved by the FDA for anything. The only people who receive it are volunteers enrolled in the clinical study. Anything marketed online as “MG001” is not the trial formulation.
What does a Phase 1 study actually test?
Safety and how the body handles a compound — how it’s absorbed, processed and cleared — in healthy volunteers, usually at a few increasing amounts compared against a placebo. A Phase 1 study doesn’t test whether a drug candidate works for anything; that comes in later phases, if it gets there at all.
Is MG001 the same as the mitragynine products sold in stores?
No. Both involve mitragynine, the alkaloid that occurs naturally in kratom leaf, but MG001 is a specific pharmaceutical formulation made and tested under FDA drug rules. Mitragynine products on store shelves — including everything we carry — are botanical products, not drugs. They are not MG001, have not been evaluated by the FDA, and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Where is the MG001 study, and how do I find out more?
The listed site is Altasciences Clinical Kansas in Overland Park, Kansas. The study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT07204171 — that listing has the current enrollment status, eligibility rules and contacts. We have no connection to the study.
Does the study change whether mitragynine is legal?
Not by itself. A drug study runs under its own FDA rules and doesn’t change how kratom or mitragynine products are regulated. Mitragynine is not federally scheduled; concentrated 7-OH has been federally scheduled since August 2026, and several states ban kratom outright — we don’t ship to those states.
